Acts 2:33

King James Version (1769)

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this passage often include viewing the 'shedding forth' of the Spirit as a one-time event limited to the apostles, ignoring its ongoing availability to all believers; claiming that speaking in tongues is the invariable sign of Spirit reception, which elevates experience over Scripture; or suggesting Jesus needed the Spirit for exaltation, whereas He sends it as the victorious head having already been anointed without measure; additionally, some deny the Spirit's full deity by treating the promise as merely a power rather than the third person of the Trinity actively indwelling and empowering the church.

Truth

Peter explains that after his resurrection and exaltation to God's right hand, Jesus received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and poured it out on the believers at Pentecost, resulting in the visible tongues of fire and audible gift of languages that the crowd witnesses, fulfilling Joel's prophecy and marking the birth of the church empowered by the Spirit for witness to the world.
