Amos 1:13

King James Version (1769)

13 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views this oracle as divine endorsement of retaliatory violence or genocide, ignoring its condemnatory purpose within a prophetic tradition decrying injustice across nations; others dismiss it as mere ancient history irrelevant to modern ethics, overlooking its timeless rebuke of barbarism and exploitation, or twist it to justify contemporary abortions or territorial aggressions by claiming 'eye for an eye' precedents, which distorts the text's focus on God's sovereign opposition to such atrocities rather than human vengeance.

Truth

This passage pronounces God's unyielding judgment on the Ammonites for their repeated transgressions, particularly the savage act of ripping open pregnant women in Gilead to expand their borders, illustrating divine justice against extreme cruelty and inhumanity in warfare; it serves as a warning that accumulating sins, especially those violating the sanctity of life, will inevitably face God's punishment without reprieve, affirming His role as the ultimate arbiter of moral order among nations.
