Colossians 3:12

King James Version (1769)

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation treats these virtues as optional suggestions or a means to achieve salvation through self-effort, rather than imperative responses empowered by the Holy Spirit for those already elect and beloved; others mistakenly apply the passage only to clergy or the spiritually elite, overlooking its address to all believers, or reduce 'bowels of mercies' to superficial pity instead of profound, heartfelt empathy that moves to action.

Truth

Paul exhorts believers, identified as God's chosen people who are holy and dearly loved, to intentionally clothe themselves with Christ-like virtues such as deep compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, emphasizing that these qualities flow from their secure identity in Christ and enable them to live in harmony within the body of Christ.
