Daniel 5:16

King James Version (1769)

16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often arise from taking Belshazzar's words at face value as endorsement of polytheism due to 'spirit of the gods,' overlooking the pagan king's limited monotheistic understanding and the biblical context affirming Yahweh's singular spirit in Daniel; others erroneously view it as Daniel seeking worldly rewards or flattery succeeding, ignoring his later refusal of honors to prioritize God's glory, or reduce it to mere human talent rather than supernatural gifting evident only through divine empowerment.

Truth

This verse captures King Belshazzar's acknowledgment of Daniel's divinely inspired wisdom, attributing to him a spirit of the gods that imparts light, understanding, and excellent insight, as reputed from Nebuchadnezzar's time; it reveals the core truth that God's endowment of wisdom in His servants shines so brilliantly it compels recognition even from worldly authorities in crisis, demonstrating that true discernment originates from God and serves His purposes amid human folly.
