Deuteronomy 18:16

King James Version (1769)

16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray the people's request as outright rebellion or rejection of God, ignoring the reverent fear of His holiness that motivated it and God's compassionate provision of prophets in response; others erroneously limit the passage to foretelling only Jesus as the Prophet, disregarding its primary context of establishing ongoing prophetic mediation in Israel through figures like Samuel, Elijah, and Isaiah prior to the Messiah.

Truth

This verse recounts the Israelites' fearful plea at Horeb, where they begged not to hear God's voice or see the great fire again lest they die, acknowledging their inability to endure direct divine encounter due to human frailty before God's holiness, which prompts God's promise to raise up prophets like Moses as merciful mediators to convey His words safely.
