Deuteronomy 1:28

King James Version (1769)

28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation treats the people's words as a literal assessment of unbeatable odds, justifying fear or retreat in the face of challenges, rather than recognizing their statements as faithless hyperbole born of cowardice that provoked God's judgment. Others overlook the context of covenant unfaithfulness, applying it superficially to modern obstacles without emphasizing the call to trust God's sovereignty, or dismiss it as mere ancient exaggeration without heeding its warning against allowing discouraging reports to undermine divine promises.

Truth

This passage captures the Israelites' moment of paralyzing fear and unbelief after the spies' report on Canaan, where they exaggerate the enemies' size and the cities' fortifications, doubting their ability to possess the promised land despite God's repeated assurances of victory. It underscores the core truth that fear can distort reality and hinder obedience to God's commands, leading to rebellion against His will rather than reliance on His power and faithfulness.
