Deuteronomy 27:15

King James Version (1769)

15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation reduces this curse to only ancient pagan statues, ignoring its timeless warning against modern heart idols like wealth, power, or personal ambitions hidden from public view that displace God. Another error applies it legalistically to ban all visual art, jewelry, or religious icons, whereas it specifically targets items fashioned for worship as deities, not neutral representations. Some also overlook the communal 'Amen,' treating it as optional rather than a vital corporate pledge reinforcing national solidarity against covenant violation.

Truth

This verse from the covenant curses on Mount Ebal condemns the making or secret concealment of graven or molten images, which are abominations to the Lord, emphasizing His exclusive claim to worship and intolerance for any idolatrous rival crafted by human hands. It calls the people to unanimous affirmation with 'Amen,' binding the community in collective accountability to reject idolatry entirely, whether overt or hidden, as a foundational aspect of faithful obedience to God's covenant.
