Deuteronomy 2:12

King James Version (1769)

12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray the verse as divine endorsement of ethnic cleansing or imperial conquest applicable today, ignoring its specific historical recap and God's unique covenant with Israel involving judgment on wicked nations rather than a universal mandate for violence. Some assume it describes total annihilation without mercy or survivors, overlooking biblical indications of displaced peoples persisting elsewhere, or misuse it to justify modern territorial disputes, neglecting the theocratic context limited to ancient Israel's divinely ordained mission.

Truth

This verse provides historical context for Israel's journey, noting that the Horites once inhabited Seir but were displaced by Esau's descendants, paralleling how God sovereignly granted Israel the Promised Land by enabling them to possess it from its prior inhabitants. It emphasizes divine providence in allotting territories to nations, reassuring Israel of God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises as they prepare to enter Canaan, while drawing a kinship connection through Esau to the Edomites.
