Deuteronomy 2:14

King James Version (1769)

14 And the space in which we came from Kadesh–barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord sware unto them.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation of this verse is assuming the 38 years represent the entire duration of Israel's wilderness wandering, whereas it specifically marks the time from Kadesh-barnea—site of the spies' rebellion—to crossing the brook Zered, fulfilling God's judgment that the faithless generation of fighting men would perish before entering Canaan; this period fits within the broader 40-year exile from Egypt, with the initial two years including the exodus, Sinai encampment, and spy incident, leading some to wrongly compress or extend the timeline and overlook the gradual dying off of that generation as a divine oath rather than a sudden event.

Truth

This verse pinpoints a pivotal 38-year span in Israel's wilderness wandering, from Kadesh-Barnea—where the older generation rebelled in unbelief after the spies' report—to their arrival at the Brook Zered, by which time God had faithfully eliminated that entire faithless cohort of warriors through death, as He had sworn due to their disobedience. The core truth underscores God's unyielding justice against persistent unbelief and rebellion, ensuring that only a faithful new generation would inherit the Promised Land, demonstrating His sovereignty in purging unfaithfulness to fulfill His redemptive purposes.
