Deuteronomy 5:22

King James Version (1769)

22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation is that God spoke the entire law of Moses directly to the people, but the verse specifies only these ten words were proclaimed aloud by God to the assembly, with the rest given through Moses; another error claims Moses wrote the tablets himself, overlooking God's personal inscription; some wrongly suggest this limits all future divine revelation, ignoring that 'he added no more' refers specifically to direct speech to the congregation at that moment, or dismiss the event as mythological rather than a historical theophany underscoring covenantal fidelity.

Truth

This passage emphasizes the divine authority and uniqueness of the Ten Commandments, revealing that God Himself spoke them directly and audibly to the entire Israelite assembly at Mount Sinai amid fire, cloud, and thick darkness with a mighty voice, adding nothing more to those words before inscribing them on two stone tablets and entrusting them to Moses, thereby establishing them as the foundational, complete covenant law proclaimed solely by God without human mediation in their proclamation or writing.
