Deuteronomy 5:5

King James Version (1769)

5 (I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you the word of the Lord: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Moses as an arrogant barrier permanently blocking direct access to God, implying God is unapproachable or that human mediators are inherently required, which ignores the context of the people's voluntary fear-driven request and God's accommodation through Moses. Another error is equating Moses' temporary role solely with Christ's eternal mediation, diminishing the uniqueness of Jesus as the perfect High Priest, or twisting it to support unbiblical clerical hierarchies that replace personal faith with priestly intercession.

Truth

Moses describes his mediatorial role at Mount Sinai, standing between the terrified Israelites and God to receive and relay the divine words of the covenant, as the people feared approaching the fiery presence on the mountain themselves. This underscores God's holiness that demands reverence and the need for a human representative to bridge the gap, establishing Moses as the faithful intermediary through whom God communicated the Ten Commandments and laws, ensuring the people could receive revelation without perishing in direct exposure to divine glory.
