Ecclesiastes 3:19

King James Version (1769)

19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views this verse as denying any spiritual distinction between humans and animals, suggesting total equality even in the afterlife or soul, which ignores the broader context of Ecclesiastes—such as God's judgment (3:17), the spirit returning to God (12:7), and eternity in the human heart (3:11)—and overlooks the 'under the sun' perspective limited to temporal observations, not eternal truths.

Truth

Ecclesiastes 3:19 underscores the shared earthly fate of humans and animals, observing that both experience the same physical death and possess the same breath of life, rendering human claims of superiority vain in the face of mortality; this verse, within the 'Teacher's' reflections under the sun, emphasizes the futility of earthly pursuits and the leveling effect of death, urging a focus on fearing God and keeping His commandments as the ultimate meaning of life.
