Ecclesiastes 8:17

King James Version (1769)

17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often twist this verse into promoting total futility of all knowledge-seeking, fostering anti-intellectualism or despair, as if no wisdom or understanding is possible at all; others read it nihilistically to claim life under the sun is utterly meaningless without comprehension, ignoring Ecclesiastes' affirmations of fearing God and partial insights; some misuse it to justify moral relativism or passivity, overlooking the book's call to diligent living amid mysteries and the distinction between attainable godly wisdom and exhaustive cosmic knowledge.

Truth

This passage reveals the core truth of human epistemological limits in comprehending the full scope of God's works in the world. Even with exhaustive labor and wisdom, no one can fully unravel the intricacies of divine providence and natural order observable under the sun, fostering humility, awe, and dependence on God rather than self-reliant mastery, as ultimate understanding resides with the Creator alone.
