Exodus 13:2

King James Version (1769)

2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include viewing this as a mandate for child sacrifice or literal ownership of children today, disregarding the historical context of Passover commemoration and the Mosaic provisions for redeeming human firstborns with a lamb or monetary equivalent; others erroneously apply it universally to Christians without recognizing its role within the Old Covenant as a temporary typology pointing to Christ's ultimate redemption, or misconstrue it as arbitrary divine cruelty rather than righteous judgment against Egyptian idolatry paired with merciful protection of His people.

Truth

God instructs the Israelites to consecrate all firstborn males, both human and animal, to Him as a sacred reminder of His powerful deliverance during the Exodus, when He spared Israel's firstborn from the plague that struck Egypt, thereby affirming His sovereign ownership over the nation and calling them to acknowledge His redemptive act through perpetual dedication and, for humans, redemption via substitution.
