Exodus 23:23

King James Version (1769)

23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include applying this ancient promise of specific military conquest as a justification for modern wars, crusades, or ethnic conflicts, ignoring its unique historical context tied to God's judgment on Canaanite idolatry and immorality after centuries of patience; others spiritualize it exclusively as personal triumph over sin or enemies without recognizing the literal, national fulfillment in Israel's history, or misconstrue the Angel as a mere created being rather than the divine Angel of the Lord representing God's own presence and authority.

Truth

This passage conveys God's promise of divine leadership and victory for Israel as they enter the Promised Land, with His Angel—often understood as a manifestation of God's presence—going before them to guide and protect, while God Himself commits to utterly destroying the specified pagan nations inhabiting Canaan, underscoring His faithfulness to the Abrahamic covenant, His sovereignty over all peoples, and the assurance of conquest rooted in obedience to His commands.
