Exodus 27:21

King James Version (1769)

21 In the tabernacle of the congregation without the vail, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the Lord: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations of Exodus 27:21 include treating it as a direct command for contemporary Christians to physically light lamps in churches, disregarding its fulfillment in Jesus as the light of the world and the shift to spiritual worship; others erroneously extend it to mandate a permanent priestly class excluding lay believers, ignoring the New Testament's universal priesthood; or they overlook its ceremonial context within the tabernacle system, legalistically insisting on its ongoing literal observance without recognizing its typological pointing to eternal divine light and grace.

Truth

Exodus 27:21 establishes a perpetual statute for Aaron and his sons, the priests, to tend the golden lampstand in the tabernacle's Holy Place from evening to morning, ensuring continuous light before the Lord in the presence of the testimony. This underscores God's desire for unbroken illumination symbolizing His guidance, holiness, and presence among Israel, highlighting the priests' vital role in maintaining ritual purity, facilitating worship, and representing the nation in divine service as an enduring ordinance for future generations.
