Ezekiel 34:10

King James Version (1769)

10 Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this passage often include viewing it solely as a condemnation of modern church pastors without recognizing its primary historical context as a prophecy against Israel's ancient kings, priests, and officials; others wrongly assume God here abandons His people entirely rather than promising active rescue; some indiscriminately apply it to all leaders today, ignoring the specific failures of selfishness and neglect described; or spiritualize it to dismiss real-world implications for social justice and accountability in leadership.

Truth

In Ezekiel 34:10, God pronounces judgment on Israel's corrupt leaders, metaphorically called shepherds, who have neglected, exploited, and devoured their flock—the people—instead of protecting and nourishing them; He vows to hold these leaders accountable, strip them of their roles, and personally intervene to rescue and shepherd His people Himself, emphasizing divine justice against abusive authority and God's faithful care for the vulnerable.
