Ezra 10:13

King James Version (1769)

13 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation frames this verse as the people's excuse for procrastination or reluctance to repent, portraying them as evading responsibility; in reality, they affirm commitment to action by proposing an assembly for orderly resolution. Another error is isolating it to justify personal delays in addressing sin, ignoring its context of national purification under priestly leadership, or dismissing it as mere complaining rather than pragmatic planning for comprehensive covenant renewal.

Truth

Ezra 10:13 reveals the immense scale of Israel's covenant unfaithfulness through widespread intermarriages with foreigners, as the people humbly recognize that their large numbers and the gravity of the transgression demand more than a rushed response—it calls for an extended, methodical communal effort to repent and separate from sin, even amidst practical obstacles like heavy rain, emphasizing that genuine obedience to God requires thoroughness, collective accountability, and perseverance over time.
