Galatians 3:17

King James Version (1769)

17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
Untruth

This verse is often misinterpreted to suggest the Mosaic Law replaced or overrode God's prior promise to Abraham, as if chronological sequence implies superiority, whereas Paul stresses the promise's permanence; others erroneously view it as dismissing the law's role entirely, ignoring its temporary function as a guardian until faith in Christ arrived, or claim it promotes antinomianism by negating all law, when it actually upholds the covenant's fulfillment through grace.

Truth

Paul asserts that God's covenant promise to Abraham, confirmed in Christ and predating the Mosaic Law by 430 years, remains inviolable; the later law cannot annul or diminish that promise, emphasizing that justification comes through faith in the promised Seed—Jesus Christ—rather than through legal observance, securing the inheritance for all believers as Abraham's heirs.
