Genesis 11:31

King James Version (1769)

31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is assuming Terah received God's call to leave Ur, when the text actually shows a family decision without mentioning divine instruction until God speaks to Abram later, leading some to credit Terah unduly for faith that was Abram's; others mistakenly think they fully reached Canaan here, overlooking their halt at Haran which symbolizes incomplete human effort awaiting God's fulfillment; confusion also arises over relationships, like viewing Lot primarily as Abram's nephew without noting Haran's death in Ur, or anachronistically placing Ur in Babylon proper rather than its ancient Mesopotamian context, distorting the narrative's emphasis on generational transition and divine sovereignty.

Truth

Genesis 11:31 depicts Terah leading his family, including Abram, Lot, and Sarai, on a journey from Ur of the Chaldees toward Canaan, but they settle in Haran instead of completing the trip, illustrating a family's initiative to relocate to the Promised Land while highlighting human partial obedience or interruption before God's direct call to Abram in the following chapter, setting the historical and geographical context for Abraham's covenant journey and emphasizing themes of migration, family unity, and divine preparation.
