Genesis 19:14

King James Version (1769)

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation portrays Lot himself as mocking or unserious in his warning, inverting the text which clearly states the sons-in-law perceived him that way due to their incredulity; others erroneously use it to justify apathy in evangelism by claiming all warnings will be ridiculed, ignoring its call to faithful proclamation regardless of response; additionally, some misconstrue the family relations, assuming fully married daughters living separately rather than betrothed ones, which distorts the immediacy of Lot's household rescue effort.

Truth

This passage reveals Lot's urgent obedience to God's command by warning his sons-in-law of the impending destruction of Sodom, demonstrating a godly father's heart to save his family from judgment, yet their dismissal of him as jesting underscores the tragic spiritual blindness of those immersed in sin who cannot discern divine truth or the seriousness of God's warnings, emphasizing the necessity of heeding calls to repentance and flight from wickedness.
