Hebrews 5:7

King James Version (1769)

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Untruth

Misinterpretations often claim this verse promises that fervent, tearful prayers will always prevent suffering or death for believers, overlooking the unique context of Christ's substitutionary atonement and that His deliverance came via resurrection after death, not avoidance. Others wrongly portray Jesus as faithless or cowardly in fearing death sinfully, when 'feared' denotes pious reverence, or detach it from His priesthood to promote a prosperity gospel ignoring submission to God's sovereign will.

Truth

This passage describes Jesus Christ in His human incarnation, intensely praying with loud cries and tears to God the Father, who could deliver Him from death, and being heard due to His reverent submission. It refers to His Gethsemane agony where He yielded to the Father's will to endure the cross, with God answering through resurrection, demonstrating Jesus' perfect obedience, sympathy with human weakness, and qualification as our eternal High Priest.
