Hebrews 6:17

King James Version (1769)

17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray God's oath as evidence of divine uncertainty or insufficiency in His mere word, implying He adapts reactively to human skepticism rather than proactively accommodating our finite understanding to showcase His steadfastness; others erroneously extend this to validate human oath-taking contrary to Jesus' teachings on truthful speech without oaths, or misconstrue the 'heirs of promise' as limited to ethnic Israel excluding Gentiles, ignoring the broader New Testament context of faith-based inheritance, or detach it from Hebrews' warning against apostasy to suggest unconditional eternal security without perseverance.

Truth

This passage reveals God's gracious intent to abundantly assure the heirs of His promise—believers who receive salvation by faith—of the unchanging stability of His eternal counsel or purpose. By confirming His commitment with an oath, God employs a culturally familiar human practice to make His absolute faithfulness relatable and emphatic, providing believers with unshakeable confidence in the security of their inheritance rooted in His immutable character.
