Hosea 9:10

King James Version (1769)

10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal–peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often overlook the metaphorical nature of the passage, treating it as a literal foraging story rather than a poignant contrast of divine affection and human betrayal; others might spiritualize it solely as personal temptation without recognizing its historical judgment on Israel's corporate apostasy at Baal Peor, or wrongly apply it to endorse casual moral lapses by ignoring the severe consequences of embracing 'abominations' like idolatry that mirror one's affections.

Truth

God expresses His initial delight in discovering Israel in the wilderness, likening them to precious wild grapes or the first ripe figs, symbolizing their potential for blessing and fruitfulness as His chosen people; however, their swift idolatry at Baal Peor turned this joy into shame, illustrating how unfaithfulness leads to spiritual corruption and divine judgment, emphasizing the call to remain loyal to God amid surrounding temptations.
