I Chronicles 17:7

King James Version (1769)

7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often twist this passage into a general prosperity formula suggesting that faithfulness in menial jobs guarantees promotion to leadership or wealth, ignoring its specific historical context within God's covenant with David; others erroneously apply it to endorse unqualified modern political figures by claiming divine selection without prophetic confirmation, or diminish shepherding as inferior work rather than highlighting David's faithfulness there as preparation for greater service.

Truth

God speaks through the prophet Nathan to David, recounting how He sovereignly elevated David from his humble beginnings as a shepherd tending sheep to the exalted position of ruler over Israel, emphasizing divine initiative and grace in choosing and appointing leaders rather than human merit or ambition, which sets the foundation for the Davidic covenant promising an eternal throne fulfilled ultimately in Christ.
