I Chronicles 21:17

King James Version (1769)

17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray David's confession as insincere or self-serving evasion rather than authentic repentance, or erroneously deem all censuses inherently sinful without grasping the context of David's prideful reliance on military numbers over faith in God; some confuse this with permission for leaders to bear others' punishments unilaterally, ignoring divine sovereignty, while others apply it legalistically to oppose modern population surveys, missing the passage's emphasis on heart motive and obedience.

Truth

David demonstrates profound repentance and sacrificial leadership by fully owning his sin of ordering the unauthorized census, distinguishing it from the innocence of the people whom he calls 'sheep,' and pleading for God's judgment to fall solely on himself and his family rather than on the nation, underscoring core biblical truths of personal accountability, intercessory prayer, humility before God, and a foreshadowing of substitutionary atonement.
