I Corinthians 14:1

King James Version (1769)

1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often prioritize the pursuit of spectacular spiritual gifts over love, leading to disorder and pride as seen in Corinth; others reduce 'charity' to mere humanitarian aid rather than selfless agape love that undergirds all gifts; some dismiss tongues entirely or elevate prophecy as the only desirable gift, ignoring the balanced call to desire all gifts while preferring those that build up the church collectively; or view the verse as endorsing emotionalism without the context of orderly worship in chapter 14.

Truth

Paul exhorts believers to pursue love above all else as the foundational virtue guiding church life, while encouraging them to earnestly seek spiritual gifts with a special preference for prophecy, which edifies the entire congregation through clear, understandable revelation from God, promoting unity and growth in contrast to gifts like tongues that may require interpretation to benefit others.
