I John 4:11

King James Version (1769)

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations include viewing this as a call for indiscriminate affection toward all people regardless of their spiritual state or behavior, diluting its focus on loving fellow believers as evidence of knowing God; reducing it to mere emotional sentimentality or niceness without the commitment to truth, obedience, and reproof as outlined in John's epistles; or reversing the causality to suggest that human love toward others earns God's love, when the passage clearly bases our duty on God's prior, unmerited love for us.

Truth

This verse underscores the reciprocal nature of divine love: since God demonstrated His immense love for us by sending His Son as an atoning sacrifice while we were still sinners, believers are morally and spiritually obligated to extend that same selfless, sacrificial love to one another, making love the defining mark of genuine fellowship with God and proof of abiding in Him.
