I Kings 11:11

King James Version (1769)

11 Wherefore the Lord said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Untruth

Misinterpretations of this verse often portray God as capricious or overly harsh, ignoring Solomon's decades-long drift into idolatry despite clear warnings and his privileged knowledge of God; others mistakenly assume the kingdom was instantly stripped from Solomon during his lifetime, overlooking the merciful postponement for David's sake that allowed Solomon to die as king; some reduce it to mere condemnation of polygamy without recognizing the deeper issue of heart allegiance to false gods, or twist it into a legalistic formula where obedience mechanically ensures national success, missing the relational and sovereign dimensions of God's dealings.

Truth

In this passage, God addresses Solomon's profound disobedience after a lifetime of wisdom and prosperity, where his many foreign marriages led him to worship other gods, violating the covenant stipulations against idolatry that God had commanded. The core truth reveals God's unwavering commitment to His holiness and covenant faithfulness: persistent unfaithfulness incurs severe consequences, as the kingdom will be torn from Solomon's lineage and given to a servant, yet mercy is shown by delaying the full division until after Solomon's death for the sake of his father David, illustrating divine justice tempered by grace.
