I Kings 13:26

King James Version (1769)

26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is viewing this as God arbitrarily punishing the man of God for being tricked, portraying divine justice as unfair or overly harsh without considering personal responsibility; others wrongly assume it teaches that true prophets are immune to deception or that all prophetic words override prior divine instructions, ignoring the passage's emphasis on adhering strictly to God's initial, personal command over subsequent claims, or extending it legalistically to imply immediate physical death for any minor disobedience today.

Truth

This verse underscores the seriousness of disobedience to God's explicit commands, as the old prophet recognizes that the man of God from Judah suffered divine judgment—a fatal lion attack—for violating the direct instruction from the Lord not to eat or drink and to return by a different path, illustrating that God's word stands firm regardless of deception or human persuasion, emphasizing unwavering obedience as essential to one's calling and safety.
