I Kings 14:21

King James Version (1769)

21 And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations include viewing the mention of Rehoboam's Ammonite mother as inconsequential or endorsing intermarriage without heeding broader biblical cautions against foreign influences leading to idolatry, as evidenced in his later reign; others erroneously downplay Jerusalem's unique divine election by treating it as mere geography, ignoring its theological centrality, or confuse the timeline by assuming it implies Rehoboam's maturity prevented folly, contrary to the ensuing narrative of his poor leadership.

Truth

This verse introduces King Rehoboam, son of Solomon, who began his 17-year reign over Judah at age 41 from Jerusalem, the city God selected to bear His name among Israel's tribes, with his mother Naamah being an Ammonitess; it establishes the historical context for Judah's monarchy after the kingdom's division, highlighting the continuity of divine choice in the southern kingdom's capital despite political fracture.
