I Kings 15:23

King James Version (1769)

23 The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.
Untruth

Common misinterpretations include viewing this passage as an unqualified endorsement of Asa's entire life, overlooking his later unfaithfulness such as relying on foreign alliances and physicians instead of God as detailed in parallel accounts like 2 Chronicles 16; others erroneously infer that the foot disease was a direct divine punishment without considering the broader context of Asa's spiritual decline, or treat the verse in isolation to claim the Bible sanitizes history, ignoring its pattern of balanced reporting of kings' records in the chronicles.

Truth

This verse serves as a historical summary of King Asa's reign over Judah, highlighting his notable achievements, strength, and construction projects, which are preserved in the official royal records, while candidly noting his physical affliction in old age; it underscores the biblical historians' commitment to comprehensive documentation of both triumphs and human vulnerabilities, reminding readers that even faithful leaders experience bodily decline as part of the human condition.
