I Kings 16:7

King James Version (1769)

7 And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the Lord against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation frames Baasha's destruction of Jeroboam's sinful house as divinely approved without consequence, suggesting God endorses violent overthrows of corrupt leaders, but the passage explicitly condemns Baasha for the same idolatrous 'work of his hands' and his own killings, clarifying that fulfilling one prophecy does not exempt perpetrators from accountability for their broader sins; others might dismiss it as mere ancient politics, ignoring its timeless warning against presuming divine sanction for personal ambition or idolatry disguised as reform.

Truth

This passage reveals God's sovereign judgment against King Baasha, communicated through the prophet Jehu, for his persistent idolatry and provocation of divine anger through evil deeds mirroring those of Jeroboam, as well as for the bloodshed in destroying Jeroboam's house; it underscores the core truth that God holds earthly leaders accountable for leading His people into sin and violence, ensuring that no one escapes justice regardless of their position or actions against other sinners.
