I Kings 18:19

King James Version (1769)

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Elijah as instigating religious persecution by summoning the prophets merely to slaughter them, overlooking the context of a fair prophetic contest where the Baal prophets fail spectacularly to summon fire, justifying their judgment under Mosaic law against idolatry; others mistakenly downplay the historical reality of Ahab and Jezebel's state-sponsored Baal cult or confuse the 'prophets of the groves' with mere environmentalists rather than Asherah cultists, thus missing the verse's emphasis on confronting systemic apostasy.

Truth

This verse captures Elijah's bold challenge to King Ahab amid Israel's deep idolatry, calling for the assembly of all Israel at Mount Carmel along with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah subsidized by Queen Jezebel, setting the stage for a divine showdown to affirm Yahweh's supremacy over false gods and urge the nation to abandon pagan worship and return to exclusive covenant loyalty to the true God.
