I Kings 22:15

King James Version (1769)

15 So he came to the king. And the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against Ramoth–gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go, and prosper: for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation treats Micaiah's response as sincere approval of the battle, ignoring the sarcasm signaled by his prior reluctance and the ensuing true prophecy of disaster, which distorts the passage into endorsing conformity to majority opinion rather than faithful truth-telling; another error views it as justifying deceptive speech by prophets, overlooking that Micaiah's irony exposes falsehood rather than promotes it, thus missing the vital distinction between true and lying prophets.

Truth

In this passage, the prophet Micaiah responds sarcastically to King Ahab's inquiry about attacking Ramoth-Gilead by echoing the false prophets' optimistic words to go and prosper, highlighting the deceptive nature of their counsel and setting the stage for his true revelation of defeat and death; it underscores the core truth that authentic prophecy confronts power with God's unvarnished reality, prioritizing divine will over royal favor or popular consensus.
