I Kings 2:39

King James Version (1769)

39 And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Solomon as tyrannical or petty for executing Shimei over a minor trip to recover property, ignoring the gravity of Shimei's prior cursing of David and the oath's clear stipulation that leaving Jerusalem equated to rebellion warranting death; others might read it as endorsing brutal slavery without context, focusing on the servants rather than the core issue of oath-breaking, or impose modern ideas of personal freedom and property rights onto ancient Near Eastern covenantal obligations where such vows were absolutely sacred and violations signaled treason.

Truth

This passage demonstrates the binding nature of oaths sworn before God and king, as Shimei violates Solomon's explicit command not to leave Jerusalem under penalty of death by traveling to Gath to retrieve his runaway servants, underscoring that even seemingly justifiable personal reasons do not excuse deliberate disobedience to divinely appointed authority, leading to inevitable judgment and reinforcing themes of covenant fidelity and royal justice in Solomon's early reign.
