I Peter 5:5

King James Version (1769)

5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often reduce the verse to a rigid age-based hierarchy demanding unquestioning obedience from youth to elders, ignoring the reciprocal call for everyone to submit mutually and the emphasis on personal humility as the core virtue. Others misuse it to endorse domineering leadership, overlooking that God opposes all pride regardless of status, or apply it legalistically outside the church context, missing its intent to cultivate humble interdependence among believers for receiving divine grace.

Truth

Peter instructs younger believers to submit to elders while urging all church members to humbly submit to one another, likening humility to a garment that one intentionally wears. This mutual submissiveness counters pride, which God actively resists, but humility invites His grace, promoting unity and spiritual growth within the Christian community by fostering a posture of dependence on God and respect for others.
