I Samuel 23:13

King James Version (1769)

13 Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray David's flight from Keilah as cowardly desertion or lack of faith, ignoring the divine revelation that the people would surrender him to Saul, thus reducing prudent obedience to mere fear-driven running. Another error is applying it legalistically to justify avoiding all conflicts or responsibilities without seeking God's specific counsel, overlooking the context of priestly inquiry and the broader narrative of David's anointed kingship under divine protection.

Truth

This passage highlights David's prompt obedience to God's warning delivered through the priest Abiathar, leading him and his approximately six hundred men to escape from Keilah before Saul could besiege the city and the inhabitants betray them. It underscores the core truth that trusting and acting on divine guidance preserves life and fulfills God's purposes, portraying David as a faithful leader who prioritizes God's direction over apparent safety in numbers or human loyalty amid persecution.
