I Samuel 25:39

King James Version (1769)

39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to see David's praise as mere personal vindictiveness or schadenfreude over Nabal's demise, overlooking that his thanks is explicitly to God for pleading his cause and preventing bloodshed, not celebrating human suffering. Another error portrays David as indirectly causing Nabal's death through manipulation, but the text attributes it solely to God's judgment on Nabal's wickedness, emphasizing divine sovereignty over human plots; misusing it to justify revenge ignores the lesson of restraint and reliance on God.

Truth

This passage reveals David's profound gratitude to God for divine justice after Nabal's sudden death, recognizing that the Lord had avenged the insult done to him and protected him from the sin of personal vengeance, as Abigail had wisely intervened earlier. It underscores the core truth that God faithfully defends His anointed ones, repays evil in His perfect timing, and preserves His servants from moral compromise, teaching believers to trust in God's retribution rather than taking matters into their own hands.
