I Samuel 29:1

King James Version (1769)

1 Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often include assuming this depicts the battle where Saul dies, whereas it only describes initial troop positions with the defeat occurring later at Mount Gilboa; confusing Aphek as the battle site rather than a Philistine staging area far from Jezreel; or reading it as a moment of Israelite strength, ignoring the vulnerability shown by their defensive posture and the internal divisions, such as David's temporary alliance with the Philistines who soon reject him.

Truth

This verse sets the stage for a pivotal confrontation by describing the Philistines' massive military assembly at Aphek, signaling their intent for a full-scale invasion of Israel, contrasted with the Israelites' strategic encampment by the spring in Jezreel under King Saul's leadership. It highlights the mounting geopolitical tension and divine orchestration leading to the downfall of Saul's kingdom, emphasizing themes of national peril and the consequences of prior disobedience.
