I Samuel 6:20

King James Version (1769)

20 And the men of Beth–shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray God as capriciously vindictive or unapproachable tyrant who strikes without mercy, ignoring the context of warned covenant violations and His gracious return of the Ark; others misuse it to foster superstitious dread of sacred objects or rituals today, overlooking the New Testament fulfillment in Christ who bridges the gap through atonement, allowing reverent access; or it gets twisted to justify elitist gatekeeping in religion, claiming only select holy people can encounter God, contrary to His desire for all to approach in faith and purity.

Truth

This passage reveals the awesome holiness of God, which evokes deep reverence and fear in His people, as the men of Bethshemesh recognize that no one can stand casually before the LORD due to His purity and the lethal consequences of irreverence, as seen in the deaths from mishandling the Ark; it underscores the need for God's presence to dwell in a place and among people prepared to honor Him properly, pointing to the separation sin creates between humanity and divine holiness.
