I Timothy 6:20

King James Version (1769)

20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Untruth

This verse is often misinterpreted as a wholesale rejection of all science or intellectual pursuits, promoting an anti-science stance, whereas 'science falsely so called' specifically critiques pseudo-knowledge or heretical teachings masquerading as wisdom, such as proto-Gnostic ideas, not legitimate inquiry into God's creation; another error dilutes its call to doctrinal vigilance into mere avoidance of debate, overlooking the active responsibility to contend for the faith amid specific threats to church purity.

Truth

Paul instructs Timothy to guard the sacred deposit of Christian truth entrusted to him, avoiding profane and empty talk along with false claims to knowledge that oppose the faith, underscoring the pastoral duty to protect sound doctrine from corrupting influences like the speculative philosophies and heresies emerging in the early church, ensuring the purity of the gospel for the flock's edification and salvation.
