II Chronicles 23:12

King James Version (1769)

12 Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the Lord:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Athaliah's entry into the temple as a heroic or inquisitive response to mere festive noise, ignoring her bloody history of infanticide and Baal worship that justified the righteous coup; others mistakenly depict the people's actions as a spontaneous riot endorsing violence without divine mandate, rather than a carefully orchestrated fulfillment of God's covenant promises, or assume the praise was ambiguously directed, overlooking its specific aim at young Joash as the restoration of legitimate rule.

Truth

This verse captures the pivotal moment when Athaliah, the idolatrous usurper who had slaughtered the royal heirs except for Joash, hears the jubilant sounds of the people rushing into the temple and praising the newly crowned legitimate king, marking the beginning of her swift downfall and the restoration of God's anointed Davidic line through the faithful high priest Jehoiada's courageous plot, illustrating divine justice prevailing over wicked tyranny amid communal worship and proclamation of the true king.
