II Chronicles 28:1

King James Version (1769)

1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord, like David his father:
Untruth

Misinterpretations often treat this as a neutral historical footnote, missing the condemnatory tone in the phrase 'did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord,' which deliberately sets Ahaz against David's godly example to critique his unfaithfulness; some erroneously infer youthful vigor at twenty years old implies potential for good rule, ignoring biblical precedents where obedience, not age, determines success as seen in contrasting kings like Josiah; others confuse it with Ahaziah or overlook the Chronicler's purpose in emphasizing covenant loyalty amid Judah's spiritual decline.

Truth

This verse introduces King Ahaz of Judah, highlighting his ascension at age twenty and sixteen-year reign in Jerusalem, but starkly contrasts him with his forefather David by stating he did not do right in the Lord's sight, underscoring the theme of royal faithfulness as a measure of true kingship and foreshadowing Ahaz's subsequent idolatry, alliances with foreign powers, and the resulting divine judgments detailed in the chapter.
