II Chronicles 28:24

King James Version (1769)

24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
Untruth

Misinterpretations often portray Ahaz's desecration of the temple as a bold religious reform or purification, ignoring the chronicler's condemnation of his idolatry; others wrongly apply it to justify closing churches during crises or destroying religious icons as idolatrous, overlooking the passage's depiction of sinful abandonment of God's house for paganism; some even twist it to endorse religious pluralism, missing its warning against syncretism that provokes God's wrath.

Truth

This passage reveals King Ahaz's deep apostasy and rejection of Yahweh worship during his reign over Judah, as he desecrated the temple by gathering, cutting up, and discarding its sacred vessels, sealing its doors to halt true sacrifices, and proliferating pagan altars throughout Jerusalem, actions that epitomize spiritual rebellion, invited divine judgment, and accelerated Judah's moral decay amid surrounding threats from Assyria and others.
