II Chronicles 34:28

King James Version (1769)

28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation of this passage is viewing it as a universal guarantee that faithful believers will always die peacefully without suffering or seeing evil, ignoring its specific context as God's unique assurance to Josiah alone amid Judah's impending doom; in reality, Josiah later died in battle (II Chronicles 35:20-27), but 'in peace' meant relative to not beholding Jerusalem's full destruction, not immunity from personal trials, which can lead to false expectations of prosperity gospel-like protection rather than conditional mercy based on genuine humility.

Truth

In II Chronicles 34:28, God promises King Josiah a merciful end due to his humble repentance upon hearing the rediscovered Book of the Law; he will die peacefully and be spared from witnessing the devastating judgment and exile coming upon Judah for its idolatry and disobedience, highlighting divine grace extended to the truly contrite heart that turns from sin.
