II Chronicles 34:33

King James Version (1769)

33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the Lord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Untruth

This passage is often misinterpreted as guaranteeing perpetual national holiness under Josiah, ignoring the qualifier 'all his days' which confines the people's faithfulness to his lifetime, after which idolatry resurfaced under later kings; others view it as endorsing forced religious conversion through royal decree, whereas it describes covenant renewal and voluntary service following the rediscovery of the Book of the Law, not coercion; it is also wrongly taken out of context to suggest individual salvation by works or leadership alone, overlooking the broader narrative of Israel's cyclical apostasy and God's sovereign grace.

Truth

King Josiah's zealous reforms exemplify faithful leadership, as he eradicated idolatrous abominations across the territories of Israel and Judah, compelling the people to renew their covenant devotion to the Lord their God; during his entire reign, the nation steadfastly followed Yahweh without relapse, illustrating how a godly king's influence can foster widespread spiritual fidelity and national renewal rooted in obedience to God's law.
