II Corinthians 10:11

King James Version (1769)

11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation is to view the passage as general advice for anyone to match online bravado with in-person actions, detached from its context of Paul's specific defense against detractors in Corinth who undermined his authority by contrasting his written boldness with perceived personal meekness; others wrongly see it as a boastful threat of aggression or violence upon arrival, ignoring Paul's overall tone of humble yet firm pastoral correction, or apply it to justify hypocrisy by excusing unfulfilled promises under the guise of future accountability.

Truth

In this verse, Paul defends his apostolic authority against critics who accused him of being bold and forceful in his letters when absent but weak and timid in person; the core truth is that his deeds will align perfectly with his words, assuring the Corinthians that his presence will demonstrate the same resolve and authority he expresses in writing, emphasizing integrity and consistency in ministry amid opposition from false teachers.
