II Corinthians 10:8

King James Version (1769)

8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
Untruth

A frequent misinterpretation portrays Paul's boasting in his authority as arrogant self-promotion or a license for unchecked power, ignoring the defensive context against false apostles who boasted vainly. Another error applies it to justify domineering or punitive leadership that harms rather than helps, twisting the explicit contrast between edification and destruction to excuse destructive behaviors under the guise of divine mandate, thus missing the passage's call for authority that genuinely builds up the church.

Truth

Paul confidently affirms the divine authority granted to him and his fellow apostles by the Lord, emphasizing its sacred purpose: to edify and build up the Corinthian church rather than to destroy it. This underscores the constructive nature of true spiritual leadership, where God-given power is wielded responsibly to foster growth, strengthen faith, and promote unity among believers, assuring that such faithful exercise of authority brings no shame.
