II Corinthians 11:23

King James Version (1769)

23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
Untruth

A common misinterpretation views Paul's list of hardships as boastful self-promotion or a call for all believers to seek suffering as proof of spirituality, ignoring the ironic tone where he speaks 'as a fool' in response to rivals' arrogance; it neither establishes suffering as a universal measure of faith nor endorses masochism, but rather exposes superficial credentials while glorifying God's strength amid vulnerability.

Truth

In this verse, Paul defends his authentic apostleship against false teachers by humbly yet emphatically listing his unparalleled sufferings—labors, beatings, imprisonments, and near-death experiences—demonstrating that true ministry for Christ is validated not by eloquence or status but by sacrificial endurance and devotion, even as he ironically calls his comparison foolish to highlight Christ's power in human weakness.
